Kevin Kallaugher (KAL) is the international award-winning editorial cartoonist for The Economist magazine of London.
Born March 23, 1955 in Norwalk, Connecticut, Kevin graduated from Harvard College with honors in Visual and Environmental Studies in 1977. In March 1978, The Economist recruited him to become their first resident cartoonist in their 145 year history. Kevin spent the next 10 years working in London as a cartoonist. While continuing his work with The Economist, Kevin returned to the U.S. in 1988 to join The Baltimore Sun as its editorial cartoonist.
Kevin has published 5 collections of his work. His newest KAL Draws Criticism was published in June 2006. KAL's cartoons are distributed worldwide by the New York Times Syndicate.
Kal's diverse portfolio for The Economist includes a 2008 board game about the world financial crisis titled "Credit Crunch" and a fully illustrated 2010 Wall calendar.
Kal has received numerous awards for his work including Political Cartoon of the Year and Feature Cartoonist of the Year (UK), Overseas Press Club Award (USA), Thomas Nast Prize (Germany) as well as honors in Hungary, Belgium, France and Italy.
In 2006, Kevin left The Sun and was named Artist-in-Residence at the Imaging Research Center at The University of Maryland Baltimore County. Kevin launched an animation production company Kaltoons LLC in 2007 dedicated to creating 3-D animated political cartoons.
In 2007, Kevin teamed up with famous improv comedy troupe The Second City for a nationwide touring show titled "The Art of Satire".
Kal's work has been exhibited at the Tate Gallery in London and the Library of Congress in Washington. He has had one-man exhibitions in London, New York, Washington, and Baltimore.
In 1999, The World Encyclopedia of Cartoons said of Kevin "Commanding a masterful style, Kallaugher stands among the premier caricaturists of the (twentieth) century."
